Laurence Walsh is an internationally recognised expert in infection control and oral microbiology, who has contributed to the development of infection control standards and guidelines for over 25 years. He has been on the staff of the School of Dentistry at The University of Queensland since 1984, including serving for 10 years as the Head of School and 21 years as Professor of Dental Science before retiring in late 2020. Laurence has published more than 440 papers, 22 book chapters and 10 books. He has been the editor of the ADA’s infection control guidelines for the past 12 years. Laurence has a Hirsch citation index of 75 and his work has attracted over 24,000 citations, placing him in the top 0.25% of scientists worldwide. He is currently ranked in the top 150 dental scientists globally by GPS Scholar and by Stanford University. Laurence was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2018 for his distinguished contributions to dentistry. His recent awards include the 2025 Elmer S. Best Memorial Award of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. This is the highest award from the Academy, and recognises distinguished contributions of international significance to dentistry.
