Welcome to the digital dentistry revolution

Throughout the years, restorative trends and techniques have come and gone. Some material developments have transformed the face of aesthetic dentistry, while other initial concepts have phased out and died. Yet the concept of digital dentistry is one that started out small, and has progressively increased in momentum until its boundaries appear to have become endless. The most exciting factor surrounding these technologies is not, however, only in the potential applications of these technologies that are being hypothesized by dental professionals. These advancements are not, therefore, something that will “eventually” emerge in the market, they are realities that are currently being released to further revolutionize the quality of dental care that is being delivered in modern restorative dentistry. As dentistry evolves into the digital world, the successful incorporation of computerization and new technology will continue to provide more efficient methods of communication and fabrication while at the same time retaining the individual creativity and artistry of the skilled dentist and dental technician, while the utilization of new technology will continue to enhance the close cooperation and working relationship of the dentist/technician team.

10.30 - 11.00 • Morning Tea - Ballroom 1 and 2

PANEL DISCUSSION - Intraoral scanning: Is it there and do we care?

As the centrepiece of the digital dentistry workflow, intraoral scanning has been around for more than 30 years but only now has it become the hot topic as more and more systems are offered to dentists. Purists pontificate the virtues of the old ways... digital dentists the new... and in the middle are the masses who want to make the leap but are unsure of whether or not they should. Driven by audience questions our panel of experts will look at intraoral scanning, whether it's as good as the traditional approach or better, how good actually are the old ways, what does good actually mean and what really matters when choosing an intraoral scanning solution.

Digital Dentistry - From the single unit to the full mouth rehabilitation

The utilisation of digital technologies in the field of restorative dentistry is fast becoming the norm in the everyday dental practice. However, the implementation and application of these technologies in the workflows of restorative dentistry can be challenging and, at times, frustrating.

The aim of this lecture is to highlight some of the key features in improving the digital workflows in restorative dentistry to ensure predictable and repeatable outcomes.

New and emerging trends that will further improve existing digital workflows and the management of more challenging cases will also be discussed.

9.45 - 10.30 • DD-5 - Ballroom 3

Simplification in the Field of Implantology

The planning and the execution of both the surgical and prosthodontic component of implantology has traditionally been regarded as a field reserved for the specialist or the truly gifted practitioner.

Emerging technologies and digital tools and workflows have however, resulted in the simplification of the many stages required to ensure a predictable and successful outcome in implant dentistry.

The scope of this lecture is to present and to highlight how digital technologies have allowed the simplification of the complete implant procedure, from the planning, the surgical, and then the prosthodontics phases.

The implementation and use of these technologies will be demonstrated by clinical cases to highlight what is easily achievable with the modern technology available today.

Digital Smile Design (DSD)

Excellence in functional and aesthetic dentistry will never be achieved by accident. It is consistently achieved by a systematic approach for diagnosis, communication, treatment planning, execution and case maintenance. Developed by Dr Christian Coachman, DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN (DSD) is a multipurpose conceptual protocol which provides remarkable advantages for clinician and patient. In this session, DSD practitioner Dr Fadi Yassmin will take the audience through a case driven guided tour of DSD, how it will change your approach to dentistry and how it integrates with the tools of digital dentistry at every level.

Digital Dentures: The current state of the art

Digital denture technology supports the clinician in efforts to reduce the clinical time required to produce a denture. Clinical procedures can be facilitated by digitally manufactured custom trays and recording devices. The integration of clinical data in available design software assures that the technician is designing dentures according to sound anatomic references. The CAD/CAM process, either printing or milling, provide accuracy to support excellence in denture fit and occlusion. The communication offered between clinician and technician in design and through prototypes that give patients direct feedback to proposed denture designs highlight the many advantages of digital denture technology, and will only enhance the close cooperation and working relationship of the dentist/technician restorative team. This lecture covers key components for the clinical and technical fabrication of a lab based digital denture utilizing a unique modular process, that offers the restorative team the ability to choose prosthetic materials based on the best combination for the patient.

Closing the Loop with Digital Immediate Full Arch Treatments

A staged process for full arch restorations traditionally been considered the gold standard.

Implant planning, Implant placement, second stage surgery and finally the delivery of the restoration has been commonplace for decades but this process can sometimes take up to 6-12 months to provide the patient with the desired outcomes.

Why can’t we do it predictably in 3 days?

Why can’t we do it predictably in 3 hours?

Digital dentistry is allowing us to do this right now.

With 4+ years and 500+ arches of immediate milled titanium implant bridges behind us, I will discuss the challenges, pitfalls, and advantages of using technology currently available to us as well as what the future looks like with technology development so we can continue to provide our patients with arguably the new gold standard for full arch restorations.

    • Lecture
