This course will discuss recent developments in infection control, with the major focus being on instrument reprocessing, following the release of the AS 5369 standard in December 2023.

The online video component (90 mins) covers the following topics:

  • New infection control terminology used in 2024 (8 mins);
  • Online resources to support implementing modern infection prevention and control (23 mins);
  • The journey leading to AS 5369 (12 mins); and
  • An explanation of how the standards system works in Australia, including the interactions between ISO, EN and Australian standards and the concepts that underline the standards landscape (48 mins). The latter video also summarises the normative ISO and EN standards for AS 5369.

As a bonus feature, there is another 8 minute video on the history of infection prevention and control over the past 150 years.

Topics for the face-to-face session (4.5 hours) include:

  • The importance of precleaning at the chairside.
  • What happens when instrument reprocessing is delayed.
  • Key requirements for the proper use of ultrasonic cleaners and washer disinfectors.
  • How to assess the outcomes of the cleaning process.
  • Workflow, PPE and hand hygiene for the reprocessing area.
  • Design elements of the reprocessing area and the concepts of physical and spatial segregation of work areas.
  • The requirements for sterilising handpieces.
  • Proper use of bespoke sterilisers running S cycles.
  • Protocols for using air-removal and steam penetration tests.
  • Correct use of chemical indicators.
  • Tests for the integrity of packaging systems.
  • Implementation of low temperature sterilisation.
  • Criteria for load release from sterilisation.
  • Definitions of non-conforming items.
  • Environmental conditions for instrument storage.
  • Record keeping requirements.
  • Batch control information, including for high level disinfection.
