Clinicians often require alteration to the exposed portion of a tooth's clinical crown in order to enhance aesthetics and/or improve/facilitate restorability. Crown lengthening is a surgical treatment that involves the repositioning of the gingival margin apically to facilitate these restorative and aesthetic treatment processes. A critical understanding of the biological width and other significant tooth-related factors will assist with determining appropriate case selection for this treatment modality. Further, it will govern the surgical technique chosen, healing times needed, the optimal timing for restoration, and indeed facilitate the treatment outcome predictability.
