Prof. Laurence Walsh AO is Professor of Dental Science at the University of Queensland School of Dentistry and recently completed a 10 year term as the Head of School at The University of Queensland. He leads a research program in advanced technologies and biomaterials and maintains a part-time specialist clinical practice in special needs dentistry. His research interests are in advanced technologies such as lasers and biomaterials and in dental microbiology.

Prof. Walsh received his undergraduate education and PhD at UQ and then studied in the USA, first as a postdoc at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and later for executive education at Stanford University. He is the current chair of the ADA Inc Infection Control Committee and the President-Elect of the ANZ Academy of Special Needs Dentistry and serves on the executive of the Australian Society for Laser Dentistry.

Professor Walsh has been the editor of the 2012, 2015 and 2020 ADA Infection Control Guidelines and is a long standing member and former chair of the ADA Infection Control Committee. He serves on three committees of Standards Australia and has been an adviser to the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care. Laurence has been teaching infection control and clinical microbiology for over 25 years at postgraduate level and has been the chief examiner in microbiology for the RACDS for 20 years. He has presented invited courses and lectures on infection control across Australia and internationally. Laurence is a clinically active specialist in special needs dentistry and is based at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. He has written well over 60 articles on infection control in ADA publications and in addition published over 320 journal papers and over 190 technical reports and literature reviews. He is also the technology editor of Australasian Dental Practice magazine.
