Worldwide studies show an alarming incidence of occupational chronic pain in the dental profession. Prolonged forward and downwardly directed, unilaterally collapsed working postures lead to musculoskeletal disorders. Research and design have focused on the dental surgery environment - the Outer Ergonomics, overlooking the importance of the dental operators’ efficiency in posture and movement – the Inner Ergonomics.

The aim of this practical and experiential workshop is to teach fundamental biomechanical design principles governing movement and posture, enabling dentists to take control of their inner ergonomics.

Course Topics

  • Musculoskeletal disorders in dentistry
  • Alexander Technique – evidence based, cause oriented method for overcoming and preventing occupational musculoskeletal disorders
  • Inner Ergonomics – co-operating with biomechanical design in movement and posture
  • Body Mapping
  • Outer Ergonomics
  • Habit change
  • Steps to optimum musculoskeletal health
  • Active Rest – self-help technique for the back and neck

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the impact and causes of musculoskeletal disorders in dentistry
  • Identify harmful movement and posture habits during clinical practice
  • Apply essential movement and posture principles to co-operate with biomechanical design at work and daily life
  • Understand the importance of Inner and Outer Ergonomics
  • Apply techniques to change dental work postures from habitual to optimal
  • Acquire self-help pain reduction and injury prevention skills

Practical demonstrations and experiential training in optimal movement and posture will give participants the opportunity to understand and practice essential skills for recovery and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries in clinical dentistry and daily life.
