'The Worn Dentition' 2 day symposium highlights the latest views on prevention, management, conservative restoration and aesthetic rehabilitation of patients presenting with dental erosion, attrition & abrasion. Cases of moderate and severe toothwear are increasingly presenting in day to day dental practice. The three expert presenters, Professor Ian Meyers, Professor William George Young and Dr Farid Khan, showcase the latest approaches and views to provide a comprehensive understanding of the field.

Day 1:
The Path to Successful Restoration

• A step by step approach based on the Stages of Toothwear is developed to manage patients presenting with moderate to severe toothwear
• Diagnostic principles are reviewed
• Lifestyle, Diets & Medications of patients with toothwear are evaluated
• Case Selection and patient factors influencing restorative outcomes
• Oral Medicine considerations influencing restorative outcomes
• Participants are taken through Clinical Cases of toothwear, study models, clinical histories and photographs, some of which will be analysed in a workshop format
• Toothwear lesion site specificity


Day 2:
Restoration of the Worn Dentition

• Restorative aspects involved in rebuilding cases of dental erosion
• Techniques to work around the limitations of dental materials
• Developing a favourable Oral Environment to best restore a worn dentition
• Challenges toothwear patients present will be identified and further explored
• Methods to improve the Aesthetic Results in cases of moderate and severe dental erosion
• Template techniques for composite rehabilitation on masse
• Direct conservative restorative rehabilitation
• Various pitfalls in restorative approaches will be identified

• Guidelines to achieve the staged improvement in cases with varying amounts of loss of vertical dimension will be reviewed

Professor Ian Meyers

Professor Ian Meyers is Chairman of the ADA Inc. Dental Instruments, Materials and Equipment Committee, Chairman of the Australian Dental Research Foundation Research Advisory Committee & the 2010 President of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Dental Association.  He is a product consultant to a range of dental companies and a member of the editorial board of The Australian Dental Journal and several other international journals. Ian commenced as Chief Dental Officer with Queensland Health early 2009 & maintains a part time private general dental practice in Brisbane and an adjunct professorial position with the University of Queensland.

Professor William George Young

Professor William George Young is a world authority on toothwear. A most

entertaining presenter, Bill has given many presentations around Australia and internationally. Maintaining his specialist practice in Brisbane, Bill has written numerous national and international articles and remains at the forefront of the field, having recently published a second comprehensive book on toothwear and its management.

Dr Farid Khan

Dr Farid Khan has co-authored a textbook on toothwear.  He has widely lectured on topics  involving toothwear and is a dental practitioner based in Brisbane. Having completed extensive research projects into the field, Farid’s main focus has been the clinical management of dental erosion, providing an in depth look into clinical perspectives relevant in day to day practice.
